Your Visit

During a visit with a provider each patient receives the time, information, and resources she needs to make choices about her medical care. Educating women about their bodies is empowering. All the staff of Asheville Gynecology & Wellness are committed to treating each patient with respect, dignity and compassion.

Well Woman Exam

(Ages 18+)

This exam is a yearly visit for your general health check up and includes the following:

  • Review of medical, social, work, family history
  • Review medications and supplements
  • Medication refill
  • Pelvic exam
  • Pap test/cervical cancer screening (age 21+)
  • Physical exam (Blood pressure, weight, and height)
  • Breast exam
  • Vulvar Skin Check (for changing or abnormal moles)
  • Nutrition and exercise discussion
  • Sexual health discussion and / or STD testing
  • This exam is prevention focused, not problem focused
  • Well Woman Exams Do NOT Include:
    • Discussion and/ or treatment of chronic or new health concerns / issues
    • Labs/diagnostic testing related to new issues

Adolescent Health

(Ages 14-17)

The conversation will vary depending on the reason for appointment. Topics that can be addressed may include:

  • Menstrual cycle and changes associated
  • HPV vaccine and cervical screening recommendations
  • Safety issues that may occur in school
  • Defining each young woman’s right not to be bullied or harassed
  • College-bound issues of safety if applicable
  • Options for contraception if applicable
  • Nutrition, supplementation, exercise and guidelines for healthy living
  • Questions teenagers feel uncomfortable asking elsewhere

Contraception

  • Review all contraceptive options; assess benefits and risks
  • Mirena IUD, Para guard IUD, Liletta IUD, Kyleena IUD, Skyla IUD, Nexplanon, and oral contraceptives offered
  • Permanent method sterilization (Laparoscopic Sterilization, Salpingectomy and Vasectomy discussion)

Cervical Screening/Pap Smears

  • Pap smears are offered as part of our well-woman visit
  • AGW follows the American College of Gynecology and Obstetrics (ACOG) recommendations for cervical screening. (Pap smears are recommended every three years for women between ages 21 and 30.)

Menstrual irregularities

heavy bleeding/Amenorrhea
  • Initial review of history
  • Lab evaluation and ultrasound as indicated
  • Treatment recommendations

Menopause symptoms

  • Review symptoms and discuss options for non-hormonal as well as hormonal approaches to assist during your body’s transition
  • Discuss nutritional and supplementation recommendations
  • Pharmaceutical and compounded hormones

Urinary Incontinence Evaluation

  • Evaluation and nonsurgical treatment recommendations
  • If surgery is indicated refer to uro-gynecologist

Thank you for your patience during the past few weeks as we finalized arrangements for the relocating and affiliating our practice. We will be joining AdventHealth Medical Group Multispecialty at South Asheville and seeing patients in the Long Shoals Road location. We hope to see you at our new location. We are excited about how much more can be done to promote women’s health with the support of other providers and the AdventHealth system who share our dedication to providing whole woman care with attention to each person’s unique needs.
